The
name Tatipai Barsa is one that is recognised among
North Australian art circles.
Born
on Thursday Island, he moved to Cairns to further his education
and to promote the Torres Straits to the world through
his seductive images and creations.
His
people are from Murray Island, situated in the eastern
region of the Straits.
For
the past 12 years he has grown into one of the Torres Strait's
leading artists.
His
inspirations include island lifestyle and his family, especially
his father and grandfather who passed on valuable cultural
knowledge that enables him to work as an artist.
Tatipai’s
works include traditional objects of significance including
animals, head dresses and drums.
“I
just wanted to give it a go and see how far it could
succeed. I believe the jewellery will provide some new
input into the industry and further compliment the vast
traditional range of works available.”
