Gigoroo Pendant

An Aboriginal woman from the Dyirbal Tribe in Far North Queensland, Del Kendrick is a true artist that has used many mediums to express her cultural richness.

Del’s history in the arts began when she was a child growing up around Innisfail and Ingham in Australia’s north, where she learned from an early age to paint animals.

Del moved from the tropics to Victoria, spending her high school years in Geelong where later she diversified her talent, applying Indigenous flavours to the make-up industry.

Del is considered by many as a pioneer in Indigenous beauty therapy and she mastered this area, practising for more than 20 years. This earned her the name ‘Gigoroo’.

“I was given this name, Gigoroo it refers to the beauty of a woman’s spirit and soul.”

Indeed, her jewellery works are just as delicate, detailed
and fine. Del believes her jewellery will follow the steps of
her successful efforts in beauty therapy and painting.

“My people have lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years. This inspired me to depict nature and my people in my artwork. The imagery is contemporary and relates to today’s society, while at the same time it explores the traditional symbolism of my culture and incorporates my own symbols.”

Del continues to paint on paper and canvas and has sold and exhibited her work to various galleries in Australia and the United States.
