Kathryn Norris

Kathryn talks about her designs.

Allow time for sound file to load.

Kathryn Norris has lived most of her life in the tropics, her traditional roots stem from the Torres Strait Island of Badu.

She lives in the Torres Strait but is a regular visitor to Cairns, where she has successfully sold and exhibited her works for many years.

She studied in Cairns where she discovered and further bolstered her success in creative and visual arts.

“I have always devoted myself to art ever since high school - I was good at it. I started exhibiting at the national heritage awards and successfully sold work there. From there I went to TAFE.”

Kathryn is now an artist-in-residence at a primary school in the Torres Straits. Her works have travelled to countries including China, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand.

She enjoys the 'easy life', as she puts it and most of her work reflects island life.

As a young girl she journeyed into the arts and crafts world making small gifts, now she is a seasoned artist and is impressed by the world of jewellery making.

“I think jewellery has a lot of potential, it's new and hasn’t happened before so I think it will take off.”
