Kel was born in Cairns. His grandfather was from the Torres Strait, his grandmother was an Aboriginal woman from Cape York.

In his early childhood Kel picked up the skills of carving from his family. Today he continues this century - old tradition, adding humour, wit and panache.

Kel is a local identity in northern Australia, with a unique style that is appealing and extremely detailed.

For those who have travelled to north Queensland, chances are you have seen Kel himself or his work.

The ‘Williams’ product is popular among tourists and his outgoing, vibrant personality makes an impression that’s everlasting.

He credits his family for his artistic successes.

“A lot of the detailed stuff was taught to me from my grandfather, at a young age I was taught to create detailed carving. But I didn’t want to copy his style so I took the skill and applied it to my grandmother’s culture. I got everything from them.”

Kel is well known for using different varieties of wood in his masterpieces, whether it’s didgeridoos, carvings or souvenirs.

While jewellery design is new to Kel, he has combined it with his carving to create a winning combination.

“This is all new to me, the jewellery industry. I’m used to doing sculptures and they sell well. So I don’t worry too much about the pieces, they speak for themselves.”
